Are Online PDF Converters Safe? What to Check First
Online PDF converters are convenient — nothing to install, and they work on any device. But you’re uploading a file to someone else’s server, so it’s fair to ask: is it safe? The honest answer is usually yes, but not all converters are equal. Here’s how to tell the good ones from the risky ones.
The short answer
For everyday files — a résumé, a homework assignment, a photo — a reputable online converter is perfectly safe. For sensitive documents (contracts, IDs, medical or financial records), it’s worth a few extra seconds of checking, or using an offline option.
6 things to check before you upload
- HTTPS. The address should start with
https://and show a padlock — your upload is then encrypted in transit. - How long they keep your files. Look for a clear deletion promise. The best converters delete your file within minutes; avoid any that are vague about it.
- Do they require an account or rights to your file? You shouldn’t have to sign up to convert a document, and no converter needs ongoing “rights” to your content.
- Watermarks and hidden costs. “Free” that adds a watermark or asks for payment at download isn’t really free.
- A real privacy policy. It should plainly say what’s collected, where files are processed, and when they’re deleted.
- Reputation. A recognizable name or a clear company behind the site beats an anonymous one.
Red flags to avoid
- No HTTPS, or a browser security warning.
- No privacy policy, or one that never mentions deleting your files.
- Forced sign-up or an email before you can download.
- Aggressive ads or “download” buttons that lead somewhere else.
For sensitive documents
If a file is confidential, either use a converter with a clear, short deletion window and no account — or convert offline: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Pages and Google’s apps can all export to PDF without uploading anything.
How PDFComet handles it
We built PDFComet around exactly these checks: files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed in the US, and automatically deleted within about 20 minutes — never read, stored, or shared. There’s no signup and no watermark, and our Privacy Policy spells it all out.
